EMBRACING WOMEN LEADERSHIP
There has been a lot of talk about women empowerment that it has begun to sound like a cliché. While I believe that the traits of leadership (capability, ability and right attitude) are not gender specific, we still exist in an ecosystem that remains unequivocally male-dominated. To close the gender gap in leadership, there has to be a conceited effort to encourage women to take leadership roles; Women have to be consciously empowered and consciously empower other women. Empowerment is the ‘can do’ factor; Going from ‘I cannot’ to ‘I can’. It is a marriage of self-awareness to education and experience and I believe that the future is FEMALE. So how do you navigate a path to leadership amid obstacles?
UNDESTAND THE TERRAIN
Difficult situations seem to elicit platitudes and clichés: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”; “If you’re given lemons, make lemonade”; “When the going gets tough, the tough get going. In both my personal and professional life, I have found that every time I’ve been in a really tough spot, rather than just ‘making it through,’ I used those times of adversity as points of leverage to become clearer, stronger, more open – more who I wanted to be. Acknowledge the uphill battle- Know that growth is not always easy. Adversity makes you stronger, it builds character and resilience
Align yourself with people you respect in your field. Entrench yourself in a community with like minds that challenge you. Once you find your network of supporters, don’t be afraid to ask for what you really need from them.
“People are more likely to jump in if you are specific about what you need them to do,” added Swartz. If you don’t ask, you won’t get.”
Find your talent, see your potential and take yourself seriously. Hard work helps us to develop self- discipline, dedication and determination.
“Don’t be afraid to stand out, be fearless and don’t just lean forward, but plunge ahead,” said Rosen Kitchens. “Playing it safe doesn’t lead to real success.”
